Why should use waterproof power supply

You might want to use a waterproof power supply if your devices will be exposed to moisture, humidity, rain, or dust. Waterproof power supplies are essential components in various industries where reliable and durable power sources are required in challenging environments.

Waterproof power supplies typically have a higher IP rating than a regular power supply, indicating that it is better equipped to handle exposure to water and other liquids.

Here is some application environment use a waterproof power supply:

  • Outdoor applications
  • Marine environments
  • Industrial settings
  • Smart lighting control systems
  • Areas where there is a risk of water splashing or even direct contact with water, such as bathrooms

What are IP ratings mean? And why does it matter when choosing led power supply?

An IP Rating represents the level of protection provided by a device against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids. An IP Rating usually has two numbers: The first number represents the level of protection from solid materials and the second number represents the level of protection from liquids

FIRST DIGIT: SOLID PARTICLE PROTECTION

The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

LevelEffective againstDescription
0No protection against contact and ingress of objects
1>50 mmAny large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part.
2>12.55 mmFingers or similar objects.
3>2.5 mmTools, thick wires, etc.
4>1 mmMost wires, slender screws, large ants, etc.
5Dust protectedIngress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
6Dust-tightNo ingress of dust, complete protection against contact (dust-tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on airflow.

SECOND DIGIT: LIQUID INGRESS PROTECTION

The second digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against harmful ingress of water.

1Dripping waterDripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect on the specimen when mounted in an upright position onto a turntable and rotated at 1 RPM.
2Dripping water when tilted at 15°Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle of 15° from its normal position.
3Spraying waterWater falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect, utilizing either: a) an oscillating fixture or b) A spray nozzle with a counterbalanced shield.
4Splashing of waterWater splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect, utilizing either: a) an oscillating fixture or b) A spray nozzle with no shield.
5Water jetsWater projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6Powerful water jetsWater projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6KPowerful water jets with increased pressureWater projected in powerful jets (6.3 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction, under elevated pressure, shall have no harmful effects.
7Immersion, up to 1 m depthIngress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).
8Immersion, 1 m or more depthThe equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions that shall be specified by the manufacturer. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.
9KPowerful high-temperature water jetsProtected against close-range high pressure, high-temperature spray downs.

For example, a waterproof power supply requires an aluminum case to house all the electronic components required to power and operate the LED lights. These aluminum cases will often have one of the following IP Ratings:

  • IP65: Dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets
  • IP66: Dust-tight and protected against strong jets of water
  • IP67: Dust-tight and protected against temporary, limited depth and duration immersion in water
  • IP68: Dust-tight and protected against complete immersion in water
